ENGINEERING NOTES
Weldability
Not_recommended

7075 in T6 / T651 condition has poor weldability by conventional arc welding processes. The high zinc and copper content makes it susceptible to solidification cracking (hot cracking) in the weld zone, and the HAZ undergoes significant strength reduction due to dissolution of the MgZn2 precipitates. For this reason, conventional MIG/TIG welding of 7075 is strongly discouraged for structural applications. Friction stir welding (FSW) is the preferred joining method for 7075 where welding is essential - FSW is a solid-state process that avoids solidification cracking and produces joints with strength approaching parent metal. For non-structural joining, adhesive bonding (aerospace-grade structural adhesives) and mechanical fastening are preferred. Where conventional welding cannot be avoided: preheat to 150-175 degrees C, use 4145 or 4043 filler, accept reduced joint strength, and apply full post-weld solution treatment and ageing if critical. Joining/filler options: Friction Stir Welding (FSW, solid state, no filler) is the preferred method for structural assemblies; AWS/MIG (GMAW) with 4145 or 4043 filler is for non-structural joints only with 150-175 degrees C preheat and full re-T6 if critical; aerospace-grade structural epoxy (Hysol EA9394 or equivalent) adhesive bonding is the preferred alternative to welding and eliminates HAZ softening.

Machinability
Excellent

7075-T6/T651 has excellent machinability - one of the best-machining structural alloys available. Machinability rating approximately 70% of free-machining brass. High cutting speeds (5-10x steel), sharp HSS or carbide tooling, flood coolant or mist. Low cutting forces reduce tool wear and allow high material removal rates. 7075 is the preferred aluminium alloy for CNC milling of mould cavities and precision components due to its combination of high strength, excellent surface finish, and fast machining speeds. T651 plate gives better dimensional stability during machining than T6 due to absence of residual stress.

Overview

7075 (DIN 3.4365, EN AW-7075, UNS A97075) is a zinc-magnesium-copper aluminium alloy - the highest-strength commercially available wrought aluminium alloy. In the T6 (peak aged) condition, 7075 achieves a minimum tensile strength of 503 MPa with a density of only 2.81 g/cm3, giving it a specific strength (strength-to-weight ratio) that significantly exceeds medium carbon steel and approaches some low-alloy steels. The alloy's strength comes from its high zinc (5.1-6.1%), magnesium (2.1-2.9%), and copper (1.2-2.0%) additions, which form coherent MgZn2 (eta phase) precipitates during artificial ageing that create very fine-scale precipitation hardening. 7075 in T6 and T651 conditions is the industry standard for aircraft structural components, high-performance mould tooling for plastic injection moulding, and precision engineering applications where minimum weight at maximum strength is the design objective. The T651 designation confirms controlled stretching after quenching to relieve residual stress - always specify T651 for plate and thick bar where dimensional stability during heavy machining is required.
