ENGINEERING NOTES
Weldability
Poor

4330V has poor weldability in the Q&T condition due to its high carbon equivalent and alloy content. Structural welding is not recommended and is not standard practice for drill collar or BHA components - API 7-1 components use threaded connections exclusively. Where welding cannot be avoided (e.g. repair welding of fabricated assemblies): solution anneal first, use low-hydrogen consumables (E8018 or higher), preheat to 250-350 degrees C, and fully re-Q&T to original specification after welding. Partial re-heat treatment of a welded zone on an AMS 6411 or API 7-1 component is not acceptable for critical applications. The vanadium addition in 4330V provides slightly better HAZ toughness vs 4340 after welding, but full re-heat treatment is still mandatory for critical components. Repair filler metals (exception only, not for critical AMS 6411 or API 7-1 components without engineering approval): SMAW E8018-C3 or E10018-D2; TIG ER80S-D2 or ER100S-2 - low-hydrogen high-strength consumables, preheat 250-350 degrees C, full re-Q&T mandatory after welding.

Machinability
Fair

4330V machines similarly to 4340 and 4145H at equivalent hardness. In the Q&T condition at Class 2 hardness (30-38 HRC), carbide tooling is essential. In annealed or normalised condition, HSS tooling may be used but carbide is preferred. Standard oil & gas drill collar machining sequence: receive as Q&T bar or hollow bar, rough turn OD, bore utility bore ID, machine API box and pin rotary shoulder connection threads, apply phosphate or other surface treatment. Use flood coolant throughout. Hollow bar significantly reduces boring cycle time and material waste for drill collar production.

Overview

AISI 4330V (also designated 4330 MOD or 4330 Modified, governed by AMS 6411) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel developed as a performance upgrade over standard 4340 and 4145H for the most demanding downhole drilling and aerospace structural applications. The grade is characterised by two key modifications to the base 4330 composition: vanadium addition (0.05-0.10%) which acts as a grain refiner and temper embrittlement inhibitor, and elevated silicon (1.45-1.80%) which raises the tempered martensite embrittlement (TME) threshold - allowing higher tempering temperatures without sacrificing strength. The result is significantly better toughness at equivalent strength levels compared to 4145H or standard 4340, making 4330V the preferred material for API Spec 7-1 Class 2 BHA components (minimum 150 ksi / 1034 MPa yield strength, minimum 160 ksi / 1103 MPa UTS) where 4145H Class 2 toughness margins are insufficient for deepwater, extended reach, or HPHT well conditions.

AISI 4330V (also called 4330 MOD or 4330 Modified, per AMS 6411) is a high-performance NiCrMoV alloy steel specified for the most demanding oil & gas downhole drilling and aerospace structural applications. Primary applications include: high-performance drill collars for deepwater, extended reach, and HPHT BHA assemblies per API Spec 7-1 Class 2; MWD/LWD and rotary steerable system (RSS) tool housing mandrels; downhole motor (PDM) mandrels and power section housings; shock sub and drilling jar mandrels for high-energy BHA configurations; aerospace structural forgings and landing gear components per AMS 6411; subsea wellhead equipment bodies; and high-performance pressure vessel closures. It is specified over 4145H when API 7-1 Class 2 toughness requirements cannot be met by 4145H, particularly in deepwater, HPHT, and high-cycle fatigue applications.
