AISI 4140 is a chromium-molybdenum (CrMo) low-alloy steel renowned for its excellent combination of high tensile strength, toughness, fatigue resistance, and wear resistance. With a chromium content of 0.80–1.10% and molybdenum of 0.15–0.25%, the alloy achieves outstanding hardenability and responds exceptionally well to a wide range of heat treatment processes — from annealing through to quenching and tempering. In its standard quenched and tempered condition, AISI 4140 delivers tensile strengths in the range of 850–1000 MPa, making it one of the most versatile and cost-effective high-tensile engineering steels available.
