Weldability
Poor

EN26 / 826M40 has poor weldability in the Q&T condition due to its high alloy content and carbon equivalent (CE approximately 0.90-1.10). Welding Q&T EN26 components is strongly discouraged - the HAZ will not respond uniformly to re-tempering without full re-heat treatment of the entire component. In annealed condition: preheat mandatory (250-350 degrees C), low-hydrogen consumables (E9018 or higher), PWHT at 600-650 degrees C mandatory. Full re-Q&T after welding is required to restore mechanical properties in critical applications. EN26 is more challenging to weld than 4340 due to higher alloy content - consult a welding engineer before any welding operation on EN26 components. Recommended filler metals (annealed condition only): SMAW E9018-D1 or E10018-D2; MIG ER100S-2 or ER110S-1 - both require 250-350 degrees C preheat and 600-650 degrees C PWHT, with full re-Q&T for critical applications.

Machinability
Fair

EN26 machines similarly to 4340 at equivalent hardness. In Q&T condition (24-32 HRC), carbide tooling essential, reduced cutting speeds vs normalised condition. In annealed or normalised condition, HSS may be used with care - carbide tooling preferred. Machinability approximately 50-55% of AISI 1212 free-machining steel at Q&T hardness. The higher Ni content vs 4340 does not significantly change machining behaviour at equivalent hardness.

Overview

EN26 (BS 970 826M40, DIN 30CrNiMo8, Werkstoff 1.6580) is a high-alloy nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel engineered specifically for reliable through-hardening in very large sections. It contains 2.50-3.00% nickel, 0.90-1.20% chromium, and 0.45-0.65% molybdenum - significantly higher alloy content than AISI 4340 / EN24 (1.65-2.00% Ni, 0.70-0.90% Cr, 0.20-0.30% Mo). This elevated alloy content produces outstanding hardenability: EN26 will reliably through-harden in sections up to 200-250 mm diameter in oil quench, compared to approximately 150 mm for 4340. In the Q&T condition at standard engineering tempers, EN26 achieves UTS of 850-1000 MPa with good toughness across the full cross-section of large-diameter bar and forgings. EN26 is specified for the most demanding large-section applications in heavy engineering, oil & gas, and power generation where consistent through-section mechanical properties are essential and the hardenability of 4340 or lower-alloy grades cannot be guaranteed across the full section.
