Weldability
Fair

EN8 / C45 is weldable with standard precautions. The medium carbon content (0.36-0.44% C, CE approximately 0.45-0.55) means preheat is recommended for sections above 13 mm to avoid hydrogen-induced cold cracking: preheat to 100-200 degrees C for sections 13-50 mm; 200-300 degrees C for sections above 50 mm. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 550-650 degrees C is advisable for critical welds or heavy sections to relieve residual stress. Use low-hydrogen consumables (E7018 or ER70S-6). In the Q&T condition, always preheat and always apply PWHT - never weld Q&T EN8 without post-weld tempering. EN8 is more weldable than the alloy steels (4140, 4340) due to the absence of Cr and Mo. Recommended filler metals: ER70S-6 for MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) root/precision passes; E7018-1 low-hydrogen basic stick electrode for SMAW (never use E6013 without preheat); E71T-1C flux-cored wire for semi-automatic FCAW of plate fabrications.

Machinability
Good

EN8 / C45 has good machinability - approximately 60-70% of AISI 1212 free-machining steel machinability index. Best machined in the normalised condition. Bright drawn condition gives better surface finish and chip formation. Use HSS or carbide tooling. Standard cutting speeds and feeds apply for medium carbon steel. Machines significantly better than alloy steels (4140, 4340) at equivalent hardness.

In the normalised condition, EN8 achieves tensile strengths of 540-700 MPa with adequate ductility for most general engineering applications. Unlike the alloy steels (4140, 4340), EN8 does not contain chromium or molybdenum additions - its strength comes entirely from carbon content, which also limits its hardenability to sections under approximately 63 mm diameter. The grade covers a large cluster of near-equivalent designations: EN8 and 080M40 (BS 970 Part 1), C45 and 1.0503 (EN 10083-2 / DIN), 080M46 (higher-carbon BS variant), AISI 1045 (North American near-equivalent), and S45C (JIS).
